We are in the middle of May, the sun is scorching at around 45 degrees, and as a mother I am always concerned about the hydration of my child. Vacations have started and even though kids are at home around noon when sun is at its peak, we must ensure that children keep sipping liquids as they don't understand the meaning of rest and their bodies are super active.
Well if you are scratching your head what to make for your child which is both tasty and healthy, here are my few favourites which are readily available at home during summers and do not take much effort to prepare them.
Nimboo Pani
This one had to be on top of the list, a summers delight for decades, and a drink which is cherished by people of all age groups. Rich in Vitamin C that keeps your gums and skin healthy, my child enjoys the sweet and sour taste and I dont have to run behind her to make her finish it. Plus, it is super easy to make and can get ready in no time.
Watermelon Juice
Watermelon is an ideal summer fruit with a lot of water content that can be consumed both as a fruit or a juice. As a matter of fact, about 90% of this fruit is constituted of water. The sweetness of the fruit plus the rich nutrients and without the need to add additional sugar, its a super healthy drink. Add few mint leaves and lemon for a different taste that also works well with children.
Lassi
From ancient times, curd has been an integral part of our staple diet during summer season on account of its coolant properties. Infact it becomes more useful when stomachs are upset, a phenomena whose frequency increases during summers. Just like Nimboo Pani, it can be served both sweet and salty, depending on your child's mood and taste and is an excellent drink to keep oneself hydrated.
Aam Panna & Mango Shake
Well if summers are associated with scorching heat, they are also associated with the season of Mangoes. This is one fruit which again is cherished by people from all age groups. In the morning you can mix the ripe mangoes with milk and consume it as a shake which is fulfilling as well. In the evening, when the children come home after playing and are tired, they can drink the chill Aam Panna made from the raw mangoes and refresh themselves.
Strawberry Shake/Smoothie
Another summer fruit which is popular among children is Strawberry. Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, this fruit helps in reducing a number of heart ailments. My daughter loves having strawberry shake but once can also try strawberry smoothies to give a different texture to this fruit and enjoy it at the same time.
Wooden Apple (also known as Bael)
Lastly on my list is Wooden Apple, also known as Bael in Hindi in northern parts of our country. This is a unique but effective fruit whose intake helps in curing digestive problems such as diarrhea and also helps in relieving stomach discomfort. You can even take out its pulp from spoon and give it to your child directly. Rich in antioxidants and fibre, this fruit increases the immunity and detoxifies the body. No wonder due to its rich properties, it's a must have fruit in summers.
